On the road in the chania region
It is certainly not easy to leave the cozy life in the Luxury Villa Dioskouroi, but in the entire surrounding region of Chania there are still many places of unique beauty that you should definitely think about!
KALYVES AND THE APOKORONAS
The village of Kalyves has remained very traditional despite the growing tourism. The beautiful sandy beaches and the wonderfully clean sea are something special. Overall, the place is highly recommended for everyone who wants to stroll through flowering streets in a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, to enjoy the day in nice cafes and just wants to have a really good holiday. In addition to Kalyves, the Apokoronas district has a number of interesting villages such as Vamos, Almyrida, Plaka, Armeni, Georgioupolis and Aptera that are worth discovering. They offer you the tranquility of the hinterland, but also contact with hospitable people.
NATURAL LANDSCAPE
A short distance from Kalyves there is a “nature trail” through untouched landscape ideal for hiking, cycling and running. There you will find the mountain river Koiliaris, where you can take a bath. The river has its source in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and flows into the sea at Koiliaris Beach near the Luxury Villa Dioskouroi.
CHANIA GREECE’S MOST BEAUTIFUL CITY
The modern city extends far beyond the historical center. The romantic flair of the beautiful old town, the Venetian fortification wall, the Venetian harbor with the famous lighthouse and the many cafes and restaurants, museums, churches, Minoan excavations, narrow streets with picturesque houses, the market hall and many shops with some very interesting Cretan products will fascinate you.
A LAKE
A special attraction of the Chania region is Lake Kournas, the only natural freshwater lake on Crete. An impressive mountain landscape with olive groves surrounds the lake, which not only attracts nature lovers almost magically. You can swim in the lake, take a pedal boat and watch turtles in the crystal clear water. And you have to eat Arni Antikristo in one of the tavernas by the lake. The lamb by the fire is a unique method of meat preparation that is deeply rooted in Cretan culture. Kalí órexi!
AN EMBLEMATIC PLACE AND A LEGEND
One of the most famous villages in southwest Crete is Sfakia, this heroic and emblematic place that stands out for its authentic Cretan atmosphere and hospitality. There are many sandy beaches and the famous Venetian Castle Frangokastello. And the “drosoulites” or “dew men” that appear at dawn with the morning dew in Frangokastello … if you are lucky you can see them emerge from the sea!
THE SAMARIA GORGE
There are many mountains and gorges in Crete. But the Samaria Gorge is unique. Walking through it is considered the experience of a lifetime! The route is rugged, 14 km long, on which rich vegetation, imposing rock formations and a wild landscape of particular beauty alternate. At the end of the challenging hike, you will take off your shoes and dip your feet in the cool blue sea of Agia Roumeli on the south coast of Crete. Just happy!
GRAMVOUSA AND BALOS BAY
You have to visit both of these unique places in Western Crete. Take a boat tour from Kissamos at the northwest end of Crete to the Cape of Gramvousa, with its impressive castle and a wonderful view of the clear sea, and then to the picturesque Balos Bay. The attraction of Balos is the beautiful sandy beach with its mixture of fine white and pink sand, the clear turquoise water of the sea and the breathtaking nature. The dunes around the lagoon are one of the last paradises on earth and are protected. There you will find plants and animals that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
TWO SPECIAL BEACHES
Falassarna, 59 km west of Chania, is a well organized, huge sandy beach with crystal clear blue water. You can do water sports, visit beach bars and enjoy a fantastic sunset. Elafonisi is 76 km from Chania. The sea has blue-green, crystal clear water and the sandy beach has pink sand!
